overview

The 1000-Day Nutritional Guide

The 1000 Days Baby Recipe App is a professional nutritional tool based on the “First 1000 Days” concept defined by the WHO. The app serves as a comprehensive assistant for parents, providing stage-specific recipes, allergy tracking, and meal scheduling. It transitions expert nutritional knowledge from Japanese media partner Shufunotomo (主婦の友社) into a localized, interactive digital utility.

Challenge

Outsourcing Management & Data Complexity

The project required high precision in both health data and project coordination. The primary challenges were:

  1. Outsourcing Governance: Managing a third-party development team in Mainland China, ensuring technical delivery met the strict quality standards of the Japanese IP partner.
  2. Dynamic Personalization: Building a system that automatically adjusts meal recommendations based on a baby’s age (in months) and specific allergen profiles.
  3. Utility to Commerce Conversion: Integrating a “Baby Store” within a utility-heavy app without disrupting the user experience.

Approach

1. Safety-First UX Architecture

Designed an Allergy Screening System that automatically flags recipes based on the baby’s recorded allergens.

  • Stage-Specific Filtering: Designed the backend logic to categorize 200+ recipes into developmental stages (e.g., Swallowing stage 5-6 months, Mashing stage 7-8 months).
  • Safety-First UX: Implemented a Allergy Screening System. Once a parent records a specific allergen (e.g., eggs or dairy) in the “Baby Record,” the system automatically flags or filters recipes containing those ingredients, reducing cognitive load and increasing safety for parents.

2. Outsourcing Leadership & Communication

Managing an outsourced team required a shift toward high-frequency communication and rigid documentation:

  • Requirement Translation: I translated complex nutritional requirements and IP-specific UI guidelines into technical specifications for the developers.
  • Agile Coordination: Acted as the primary bridge between the internal designer and the external tech team, managing the sprint cycles to ensure the built-in mall and recipe database were integrated seamlessly.

3. Growth-Driven Feature Set: The “Baby Diary”

To increase daily active users (DAU), I prioritized the Baby Diary feature. By allowing parents to record daily intake and growth milestones, we transformed a “reference app” into a “daily record app,” significantly increasing user stickiness and data collection for future personalized marketing.

Results & Impact

  • Comprehensive Content Delivery: Successfully launched with a localized database of 200+ expert-vetted recipes.
  • E-commerce Integration: Built an in-app marketplace for fresh ingredients and parenting books, creating a direct path from “looking at a recipe” to “purchasing ingredients.”
  • High Functional Utility: Created a robust “Baby Record” system that tracks allergies and growth, positioning the app as an essential utility tool rather than just a content gallery.
